In the Studio: Rodeo Clowns
Jul 7th, 2007 by Derrick Fung
So you read about my various music endeavors, passion for music, and tutorials on how to start your own project studio, but I havn’t had a chance to display some of the things I’ve been up to. Recently, my friend Verne came over (you can check out his blog at http://creativebriefing.com) and we recorded a cover of Jack Johnson’s Rodeo Clowns. It’s a very up-beat song, with a bit of spanish flavour. The song was recorded in my project studio, which is still under development. I was hoping to save this next part for the Project Studio Series, but it goes hand-in-hand with this post, so why not. Below you will find (1) a link to me and Verne’s rendition of Rodeo Clowns and (2) a list of the equipment I used to record it.
Equipment:
- Rhythm Acoustic Guitar: Verne’s Art & Lutherie - not sure what model it is.
- Solo Acoustic Guitar: My Norman B20-HG Acoustic guitar
- Bass Guitar: Borrowed a “Rogue” bass guitar from a friend
- Vocal Mic: Audio Technica AT4040
- Guitar Mic: Apex Condenser Microphone
- Mixer: Yamah AW1600
- Shaker: $2 egg-shaker from Long & Mcquade
As you can see, it doesn’t require a whole lot of money to record at an amateur level. Verne played the rhythm acoustic, and sang. I played the bass guitar, solo acoustic guitar, and the shaker. The quality isn’t too bad either! Note that we didn’t go through the tedious ‘mastering’ process, which is usually done professionally. This song wasn’t edited in any way, shape or form, so you can consider it a ‘live performance’. Of course, this recording sounds best when you have some sort of subwoofer or bass-booster. I would recommend listening to it with a decent computer sound-system or ear-phones, as it brings out the bass guitar. Without it, it sounds a bit dull. This is just a sneak-peak to Part 2 of the Project Studio Series, where I will have pictures of my home studio and my equipment. Stay tuned! But for now, listen to our recording below

Rock on! (Critics, go easy!)
To be honest, I don’t know what model my guitar is either, Derrick. You beat me to knowing the brand already. I have no technical music know-how whatsoever… it’s all heart baby!
Gotta love the drock studios recording sessions though…
I’ve been lucky enough to visit drock studios, and it’s been quite the experience listening to em jam. Good song, *thumbs up*.
Thanks Satish. Maybe you can join our band with your triangle
Loving it! Good job.
Music: another creative outlet…
My good friend Derrick from The Music Blogger (www.themusicblogger.com) posted about some recordings him and I did a few weeks back. He’s posted a raw (or ‘unmastered’) recording of Jack Johnson’s Rodeo Clowns done in his baseme…
[…] As promised, here are some pictures from my little project studio. I’ve invested $3000 into this thing, which isn’t a lot compared to many of the more professional project studios out there. Take a look at some of the pictures, along with the captions. Interested in the type of music this studio can record or the type of equipment I own? Visit this post here. […]
