Dear Musicians,

Welcome to the first installment of a user-submitted contest on TheMusicBlogger.com. As you can see, we have quite a few contests running concurrently, but this is the first contest which involves users to submit their video for thousands of users to see.

What is the Carly Comando Contest? This is a very simple contest. First, view the video of Carly Comando’s song “Everyday” by clicking here. It’s  a very beautiful piece composed for a video depicting a guy taking pictures of himself “Everyday” for 6 years. The song can be described as a “magical” piece, yet not many people have the sheet music for it, which makes this contest so much more challenging. I want YOU to record yourself playing Carly Comando’s “Everyday” on video. Because the sheet music isn’t widely available, you’re going to have to either watch a tutorial on YouTube, or listen to the song and try to play it out by ear - it’s up to you. Please make sure you follow the rules below when recording:

  1. At the start of the video, please look into the camera and state that the video is for TheMusicBlogger’s Carly Comando Contest.
  2. Please ensure that the camera shows your face and hands, so we know it’s actually you playing the song.
  3. You don’t have to play the WHOLE song, but obviously when judged, voters will take into consideration that you actually learned the whole song.
  4. For the title of the video on YouTube, please put TheMusicBlogger.com Contest: <Insert Your Name>. Also, please tag the video “TheMusicBlogger.com Contest” as well.

It’s that simple. Record a video of you playing Carly Comando’s Everyday, and you could win!

How are the winners decided? Once we have at least 10 submissions for this contest (I’ll check by January 23rd), I’ll post the 10 videos on the main page of TheMusicBlogger, and will ensure that all 11500+ members of the Facebook Group and the thousands of users signed up on the mailing list are notified to VOTE. Voting will commence for 5 days, and the winner will be selected at the end of the 5th day. Voting will take place on the site, through a poll, similar to the one on the right navigation bar right now.

What do you win? Yes, the best part of the contest :) The ultimate winner will take home the following:

  1. Carly Comando ”Everyday” Official Sheet Music (not that you’ll need it by that time anyway, right? ;))
  2. The fame and stardom gained from starring in a video shown to thousands of users on a daily basis.
  3. $50 in CASH, mailed to your home.
  4. $100+ Value: Free Sheet Music For a Year (Depending on your taste and interests, 1 piece of sheet music from www.sheetmusicplus.com will be sent to your address per month)
  5. More Sheet Music For Life (Access to an online sheet music database with hundreds of sheet music downloads available…this is where we get all OUR sheet music)

How do you enter? Simple. First, submit your video on YouTube, and make sure that you follow the guidelines above. Post a comment here with the link to YouTube, and i’ll add it as an entry. When we have enough entries, I will start embedding the videos on the site for everyone to see and vote.

If you have any questions, leave a comment as well! Good luck!

Happy New Years!

Hope everyone had a good New Years - I know I did. I spent this year downtown, at the City Hall of Toronto (by Nathan Phillips Square). I subwayed down with my friends, and got down there around 11:35pm - just in time for the countdown. Afterwards, headed over to my friend’s sister’s boyfriend’s condo, where we just lounged, and ordered some pizza. It was eventfull, nonetheless, and I’m excited for all the things 2008 has to bring. I’ve been doing some thinking, and I’ve come to the conclusion that one of my New Years resolutions for 2008 is to spend more time playing music. As some of you may know, I’m finishing off school at the University of Toronto in Business Management, and hopefully trying to land a career in Corporate Finance (yes I know, totally different from a career in Music). I’ve realized that lately, I havn’t spent much time playing music. Yes, I have a little mini studio in my basement which has been quite lonely for quite some time. University gets BUSY, and it’s sometimes hard to just sit down and play. My New Years resolution is to put some time into recording and just jamming with my buddies. The question of the day is: why do we lose passion to play music? How can we renew our drive to play music?

  1. Focus on your strengths. Sometimes watching all the videos on YouTube of artists like Marie Digby may make us feel insignificant. Different musicians have different strengths and skills. We can’t all hit those falsettos like Chris Martin from Coldplay, nor can we play the guitar like John Mayer. However, we all have a strenth in something - so focus on it. I know for me, my vocal range isn’t that wide. But it doesn’t matter, because I’ve tried to cater all my music and recordings to my style. Don’t let celebrities bring down your motivation to play - they’re famous for a reason. Instead, work on what you’re good at, and go from there.
  2. Set SMART Goals. Set goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. If you want to improve your vocals, you could choose a note that you can’t hit smoothly at the moment, and see if you’ve improved after a couple of months. If you’re a guitarist, maybe you can set a goal of playing a specific song or blues scale within a certain time frame. I’ve come to realize that if we don’t set goals, it’s hard for us to improve. Moving forward, I think it’s important for me to set a realistic and specific goal, so I can really measure my improvement.
  3. Visit TheMusicBlogger. I know, I know. Kind of obvious for someone like me to recommend this. But I work hard to provide you with the resources and tools to renew that passion, and I will continue to do so in 2008. Many people have told me that the existence of this site has allowed them to renew their passion. I quote from one of the readers, “This website is absolutely WONDERFUL. You’ve actually gotten me excited about playing the viola and trying to learn treble clef, again”. I try my best to help musicians of all walks of life, and I hope that this site continues to drive your passion to play music.

So there you have it. Those are some pointers from me. But let’s hear it from you: What are your goals for 2008 (music wise) and how do you plan on improving your music skills?

I’m the type of person that could spend hours and hours on YouTube watching people’s covers of songs. Some of them are flawless, and some of them are just…well…let’s just say they’re better off taking their video off YouTube. I’ve always wanted to create a ‘battle of the covers’ on the blog, so here’s the first entry of it. Essentially, it’ll be a weekly contest, where I’ll be posting two people/bands doing the cover of the same song. Viewers, you must vote on who you think wins, based on:

  • Technical Ability: Did they play all the right notes, and were they on key?
  • Star Potential: Can you see them actually making it big?
  • Quality of their recording: Was it rushed, or did they put time into it?
  • Replication of the Song: How close is it to the original?

This week on Cover Lover (the new name of the weekly contest ;) ) we have two individuals battling it out. I will post the original song below, followed by the two people’s rendition of the song. Viewers, please vote on who you think deserves to win through the contest. I’m going to try to come up with some big prizes for voting, but since it’s the first week, here’s your incentive. Every Vote (comment) counts as ONE entry. I will choose 5 entries, and the winner will receive some awesome sheet music. Good luck!

This week’s song: John Mayer - Heart of Life

Here’s Sheryl Crow’s newest single. Kevipod quotes “American singer Sheryl Crow has recently released the music video for her new single “Love Is Free”, from her sixth studio album entitled “Detours”, out February 5th via A&M Records. Apparently this song is the official first single off the album. There was another song called “Shine over Babylon”, the first song to leak from the upcoming CD, and everybody was assuming it was the lead single and it even had a music video but seems her label wanted now to switch things”. Check out the song. I think it’s pretty good, considering she’s been gone for quite some time…in her little bubble. The intro kind of reminds me of a song by Bedouin Soundclash. It’s one of those songs I listen to when cruising down the highway in the summer. God, I hate snow.

Congratulations to Gordie Howe for winning the song Everyday by Carly Comando. This is the official version, purchased from Carly. You can check out her MySpace at www.myspace.com/carlycomando. Here was his entry:

55Gordie Howe

1. Gordie
2. Hopeful

Gordie, I’ve sent you the sheet music. The song by Carly is definately hopeful. Thank you for everyone who entered. Some words you used which described her sheet music included Ground-breaking, Heartfelt, and Serene. Her song, which she composed by ear, is a very warm and deep song. It was recently used by the infamous NBA commercial, “Where Amazing Happens”. I’ve sent an email to Carly - hopefully we’ll be able to interview her on TheMusicBlogger, and hopefully she’ll give me a couple of free sheet music I can distribute through another contest here on the blog ;) But for now, congrats to Gordie, and enjoy playing Carly Comando’s everyday!
